Clay Butte Lookout is a historic forest fire lookout in the Shoshone National Forest of northwestern Wyoming, near Clark in the northern Absaroka Range. Begun in 1941 through the Civilian Conservation Corps and completed in 1943 after the CCC was disbanded, it is a three-story wood-sided tower built with heavy beams and raised 26.25 feet above the butte. It was designed to detect forest fires across a remote mountain landscape, reflecting a period when staffed lookouts were central to wildfire detection in the West. Its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014 recognized both the structure and the conservation era that created it.
