Jane Addams, winner of the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize, was known for her work as a social reformer, pacifist, and feminist during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She opened one of the first settlement houses in North America, providing services for poor and immigrant populations in the Chicago area, and went on to become the first female president of the National Conference of Social Work. A stone cottage built in 1922 and used as one of six classrooms and dormitories for students of Ellis College was named in recognition of her service to the causes of peace and women's rights.
