Spinney Mountain State Park in South Park, Park County, centers on Spinney Mountain Reservoir. The City of Aurora owns the reservoir and surrounding land, while Colorado Parks and Wildlife manages the park. Built in 1981, the reservoir is Aurora’s largest and supplies most of the city’s water. At high water it stands 8,710 feet above sea level and holds 53,651 acre-feet. The park is widely known for fishing, especially for rainbow trout and northern pike, with brown trout also present. It takes its name from nearby Spinney Mountain, and it seasonally closes when winter ice freezes the reservoir, usually reopening around mid-April.
