King Philip's Cave in Norton, Massachusetts, near Lake Winnecunnett, is closely linked to local tradition about Metacomet, the Wampanoag sachem the English called King Philip. According to that tradition, he hid here near the end of King Philip's War before his death in the Great Miery Swamp in Bristol, Rhode Island. The cave's association with that story has made it a place of lasting local prominence. It stands on a seven-acre parcel owned by the Land Preservation Society, and the surrounding town forest and lake have long been noted recreation areas while the cave's legend has remained familiar to generations of Norton schoolchildren.
