Mount McDuffie is a remote 13,291-foot summit on the Black Divide in Kings Canyon National Park, notable for its steep rise above Le Conte Canyon and its commanding presence in the high Sierra. Though not among California’s very highest peaks, it ranks ninety-third in the state and stands out for nearly 4,900 feet of relief in a short distance. The mountain is named for conservationist and mountaineer Duncan McDuffie, a Sierra Club president and pioneer of an early Yosemite-to-Kings Canyon high route that foreshadowed the John Muir Trail. Its summit was first climbed in 1951, and additional routes were established in the decades that followed.
