Black Forest Trail is a forty-three-mile loop in north-central Pennsylvania through Tiadaghton State Forest, connecting Pine Creek Gorge with the Allegheny Plateau above. Named for the dark original forest that reminded immigrant loggers of Germany’s Schwarzwald, it is known as one of Pennsylvania’s most scenic and demanding backpacking routes. Beginning at Slate Run, the trail climbs to the plateau, crosses Algerine Natural Area, and follows a punishing rhythm of steep descents into side gorges and hard climbs back to the uplands. Along the route are wide views, remote forest, and remnants of the late nineteenth-century logging and railroad era, including a railroad foreman’s stone hut.
