Little Pine State Park in north-central Pennsylvania combines recreation with a long human and natural history. Native peoples, including the Susquehannocks and later Shawnee, Lenape, and Iroquois-associated groups, used the wider Pine Creek watershed before European American settlement began in 1782. The Little Pine valley became part of Pennsylvania’s lumber economy, with sawmills, logging families, and log rafts continuing until 1909. The modern park grew from a Civilian Conservation Corps picnic area begun in 1933, then expanded after a dam created its lake in 1950. Its landscape reflects both Ice Age carving and much older rock formations, while regrown forests and nesting bald eagles shape the park today.
