Boiling Springs State Park, about six miles northeast of Woodward, developed in the 1930s around cool springs whose sandy bottoms create a boiling appearance caused by fast-rising underground water, not heat. The area had a much longer human history, including Native American use, early Spanish expeditions, Indian encampments reported in 1641, a fur trading post established in 1823, and settlement after the 1893 land run. After Woodward acquired much of the land in 1935, Company 2822 of the Civilian Conservation Corps transformed it into a public recreation area. Today its wooded landscape, lake, wildlife, camping, trails, swimming, fishing, and golf make it a major regional destination.
