Crabtree Hot Springs is a secluded group of four natural hot springs in a steep canyon along the Rice Fork of the Eel River in Lake County, California. Long before Euro-American settlement, Native Americans used the springs, valued their waters as health-giving, and traveled there by trails linking nearby valleys and villages; Medicine Rock reflects that healing tradition. Around 1875, John Fletcher Crabtree and his sons reached the site and promoted it for supposed medicinal cures, and later Samuel T. Packwood tried to develop a more formal resort. The area also drew unsuccessful quicksilver prospecting, while access roads evolved from Native trails and wagon roads to Twin Valley Road in 1933 and 1934.
