The Upper American Fork Hydroelectric Power Plant, located in American Fork Canyon just east of Highland and constructed in 1906-1907, is significant for its association with the development of early hydroelectric power in northern Utah County. It was one of four electric generating stations built to supply power to the towns of American Fork, Lehi, and Pleasant Grove, as well as nearby industries, and it is the only one of the four still existing. Designed by engineers Willard Young and Frank Kelsey and built by the Utah County Light and Power Company, it features a simple design common among plants built by power companies in the early 1900s. The powerhouse, the key feature of the facility, abuts the canyon wall and is a T-shaped brick structure with a concrete foundation and a hipped roof. It remains in excellent condition and retains its historic integrity.
