Local citizens have long fought to preserve the Timpanogos Cave System. In 1922, President Harding declared it Timpanogos Cave National Monument under Forest Service management, and in 1934 it was transferred to the National Park Service. Today the monument is surrounded by the much larger Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. The National Park Service and the U.S. Forest Service manage these lands for millions of visitors each year, balancing protection of natural, cultural, and historic resources, natural quiet, dark skies, solitude, and rejuvenation with access to timber, minerals, grazing lands, watersheds, wilderness, and recreational opportunities.
