American Fork Canyon in northern Utah is a major gateway into the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway and a heavily used recreation landscape shaped by the American Fork River in the Wasatch Range. Its roads connect visitors to Mount Timpanogos country, reservoirs, springs, campgrounds, and trails used for hiking, biking, horseback riding, fishing, and winter sports. The canyon also preserves much older evidence of human presence, including Fremont pictographs several thousand years old and artifacts from small caves that suggest use by hunters as temporary shelters or base camps. More recently, recreation fees collected there have supported local visitor services, facility maintenance, habitat improvements, and resource protection.
