Riker Hill Fossil Site in Roseland, on the border with Livingston, is a sixteen-acre preserve that began as part of the fifty-five-acre Roseland Quarry. After dinosaur tracks were discovered there in 1968, local teenagers Paul E. Olsen and Tony Lessa studied the quarry and, over several years, uncovered more than a thousand tracks left by dinosaurs and other animals and insects from the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic. When development threatened the quarry, they campaigned to save it. The most productive fossil-bearing section was preserved, later becoming a National Natural Landmark and an important protected record of prehistoric life in New Jersey.
