Pownal was the site of one of the state’s oldest white settlements, where Dutch settlers lived for a short time after 1724. Up this valley came pioneers from Connecticut, including Ethan Allen, who led the dauntless Green Mountain Boys, and Thomas Chittenden, the first Governor of Vermont.
