James and Ida Goulette of Iron Mountain played a major role in the restoration and preservation of the Cornish Pumping Engine, the largest ever built in the nation. In a lifetime of service to his fellow citizens, Jim served for many years as a Michigan State Legislator and for more than twenty-five years as Legislative Consultant of the Michigan Iron Mining Association. His lifelong interest in mining on the Menominee Iron Range began in childhood, when his father and brothers worked in the mines of the Iron Mountain area. Through their personal generosity and Jim's ability as a fundraiser, the Goulettes helped ensure that future generations would learn about the history of early mining on the range.
