The William F. Curtis Arboretum is an 84-acre collection of more than 140 varieties of trees, shrubs, and flowering bushes on the campus of Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Its landscape began in 1915, when the college moved to a new site that was then a cornfield with a single black walnut tree. Much of its growth was shaped by William F. Curtis, the college’s seventh president, who encouraged gifts of plantings instead of speaking fees, giving the grounds a cumulative, personal character. After the original black walnut was lost in a storm in 1983, the grounds were officially certified as an arboretum in 1985.
