William Martyn Baird, born in 1862, graduated from Hanover College in 1884 and joined his college friend Samuel Austin Moffett as an early Presbyterian missionary to Korea from 1891 to 1931. In 1897 he founded what became Soongsil University in Pyengyang, the pioneer of Korean college education, and served as its first president from 1905 to 1915. He was the inspirer of a Korean future vision and a leader of modern mission education in Korea. Samuel Austin Moffett, born in 1864, graduated from Hanover College in 1883 and was the pioneer Presbyterian missionary to northwest Korea from 1890 to 1934. In 1901 he established the Presbyterian Theological Seminary of Korea and served Soongsil College as its third president from 1919 to 1928. Together, these two Hanover graduates were recognized for outstanding service for Christ through Soongsil and for exemplifying Soongsil’s motto, “Truth and Service.”
