At Churchville, the Council of Safety met on 5 April 1775. It was considered as a site for the county seat in 1781. George Washington passed through on 6 May 1775 on his way to be made Commander-in-Chief of the Army. Lafayette and his troops marched past on 15 April 1781 on the way to Virginia. Part of Rochambeau’s troops passed through in September 1781 toward Yorktown.
