Fort Bishop, one hundred yards west, was built by the United States Army to protect against Confederate raids. It was named for Captain Wm. Bishop of the 100th Ohio Infantry, who was killed in action at Dallas, Georgia, in May 1864. United States Army engineers, using detail from the 109th Colored Infantry, began the fort on September 23, 1864. By the end of the war in April 1865, the work was almost complete. The fort had seven field guns and was also called Fort Gallup and Fort Hill.
