Students in rural schools used slates rather than paper, entered through separate doors for boys and girls, and did not sit together. One teacher taught all grades using the books kept in the desks. Over time, log cabin schools gave way to wooden schoolhouses and later to brick buildings. Poppleton School was expanded three times, but children continued to learn in the original classroom until 1978.
