Mount Laguna Observatory, operated by San Diego State University in the Laguna Mountains east of San Diego, opened in 1968 as the university’s astronomy program expanded. For many years it worked in partnership with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Its instruments have supported both research and teaching, including the Illinois telescope, the Clifford Smith telescope, and the Reginald Buller Visitors’ telescope for public viewing and education. The site also hosts EvryScope, a wide-field survey instrument developed with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and has served as a testing ground for new telescope technology. It remains an active research and instructional facility.
