Cuyapaipe Mountain
Nature
Cuyapaipe Mountain, also called Cuyapaipe Peak, is the highest summit in the Laguna Mountains of San Diego County, California, reaching 6,381 feet. It stands within the Ewiiaapaayp Indian Reservation, homeland of the Ewiiaapaayp Band of Kumeyaay Indians, formerly known as the Cuyapaipe Band of Mission Indians. Its importance rests not only on being the top point of the Laguna range, but also on its location on tribal land rather than in a public park or town setting. The mountain therefore occupies both a prominent place in the region’s physical landscape and an enduring place in the cultural geography of the Kumeyaay community east of San Diego.
