On October 5, 1892, the five-member Dalton Gang rode into Coffeyville planning to rob two banks. Coffeyville citizens defended the town, killing Bob Dalton, Grat Dalton, Bill Powers, and Dick Broadwell, while George Cubine, Charles Brown, City Marshal Charles Connelly, and Lucius Baldwin were killed defending the banks, and three other citizens were wounded. George Cubine and Charles Brown were buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Charles Connelly in Independence, Kansas, and Lucius Baldwin in Burlington, Kansas. Broadwell's family took his body back to Hutchinson, Kansas. North of this site lie Bob Dalton, Grat Dalton, and Bill Powers; a pipe that had been the hitching rail where their horses were tied in Death Alley served as their only marker until Emmett Dalton was pardoned after serving fifteen years in the Kansas penitentiary and installed a headstone. Also nearby is the grave of Frank Dalton, their brother, who was killed in 1887 in the line of duty as a U.S. Deputy Marshal.
