Stowe Mountain Resort in northern Vermont spans Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak and is closely tied to the early development of alpine skiing in the state. In 1933, the Civilian Conservation Corps cut the first trails on Mount Mansfield, and in 1934 the Mount Mansfield Ski Patrol was founded, later becoming the basis for the National Ski Patrol and the oldest ski patrol in the United States. The resort also helped pioneer lift development, adding Vermont’s first single chairlift in 1940. Today it features 116 trails, about 40 miles of skiable terrain, and remains one of Vermont’s best-known ski destinations.
