The Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont, grew from the home Maria and Baron Georg von Trapp established after leaving Austria following the 1938 Nazi annexation and settling there in 1942. The family opened it as a 27-room ski lodge in 1950, expanded it over time, and helped shape its winter identity by developing cross-country ski trails in the late 1960s. After a devastating fire destroyed the lodge in 1980, a new Austrian-style lodge opened in 1983. Still closely tied to the von Trapp family, the property evolved into a large resort and working farm with skiing, recreation, dining, brewing, and a family cemetery on its grounds.
