Red Covered Bridge in rural southwestern Morristown, Vermont, carries Cole Hill Road over Sterling Brook. Built in 1896, it is the town’s only surviving 19th-century covered bridge and one of the last erected during Vermont’s historic covered-bridge building era. The single-span queen post truss is 64 feet long and features red vertical board siding, a red metal roof, and an unusual truss design with bottom chords made from twelve layers of planking. Set on stone and concrete abutments, including a granite outcrop in the north abutment, it was strengthened with steel I-beams in 1971 and remains an active, significant piece of rural infrastructure.
