The Farmers and Merchants Bank once stood here, with Andrew Trew Blachly as its co-founder and cashier, and the Simpson Hardware Store stood across Main Street. On September 7, 1893, the notorious McCarty Gang held up the bank, and Blachly, though covered by two guns, gave the alarm and was instantly killed. The bandits fled north on horseback along the alley behind the bank. W. Ray Simpson, a Kentucky sharpshooter, heard the shot, ran down Third Street with his single-shot Sharps rifle, and was fired upon by the robbers. He returned their fire and killed one bandit 240 feet away as the robbers leaned over their horses' necks. As Simpson reached the alley, he shot a second robber, who had looked back from over a block away, and the man fell 345 feet beyond the first corpse. One robber escaped, and most of the money was recovered. The murder left Mary Adele Blachly with eight little boys, and she moved to a desert ranch on Garnet Mesa, where she raised them all to manhood alone.
