Dominguez–Escalante National Conservation Area is a protected landscape in western Colorado between Grand Junction and Montrose. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, it covers 209,610 acres of canyon country on the Uncompahgre Plateau along the Gunnison River. Established by the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, it includes 66,280 acres designated that same year as the Dominguez Canyon Wilderness for added protection. Its rugged terrain includes canyons, river corridors, and the plateau’s edge, with its southwest side bordering Uncompahgre National Forest. The area’s protection preserves an important western Colorado landscape while supporting hiking, backpacking, camping, and other outdoor recreation.
