Hungry Hill
Military
2
During General Sullivan’s Expedition of the Revolutionary War in 1779, troops traveling north to avenge the Wyoming Massacre named this encampment site Hungry Hill and called the adjacent swamp Hell’s Kitchen. Army engineers built the first road on the Pocono Plateau across the desolate area known as the Great Swamp. Meager provisions forced the soldiers to live off the land, and one died here.
