Mount Charleston
Nature
Mount Charleston, whose summit is Charleston Peak, is the highest mountain in the Spring Mountains and Clark County, rising prominently above southern Nevada’s surrounding basins about 35 miles northwest of Las Vegas. Known in Southern Paiute as Nuvagantu, “where snow sits,” and in Shoshoni as Nüpakatütün, it is a year-round destination with trails, campsites, picnic areas, a ski area, lodging, and broad summit views. The mountain also holds Cold War significance: near the summit lie the remains of a 1955 CIA C-54 Military Air Transport Service plane crash during the secret U-2 development program that killed 14 men in a blizzard.
