The Delaware River Valley lies to the west, with the river flowing parallel to the ridge and mostly out of sight until it curves and heads northwest. Across the river are Pennsylvania and the Pocono region, and on a clear day the view extends about 40 miles to the distant Moosic Mountains near Scranton, Pennsylvania. The clearing immediately below, now the Cedar Swamp Picnic Area, was the site of a Civilian Conservation Corps camp from 1933 to 1941 that housed up to 200 men at a time. Men in Company 1280 primarily worked on construction projects within the park, while Company 216 focused on forestry projects, and together they built many of the roads and facilities that park visitors still enjoy today. In the mid-1930s, the camp included bunkhouses, and although the two camps lived and worked in close proximity, each maintained its own dining halls, recreation areas, and bunkhouses.
