The citizens of Gardner erected this memorial in grateful dedication to the veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Philippine insurrection of 1898-1902. It honors the memory of the U.S.S. Maine, destroyed in Havana Harbor on February 15th, 1898, and was cast from metal recovered from the U.S.S. Maine.
