Redemption Rock in Princeton, Massachusetts, is a small colonial-era site near Mount Wachusett associated with a famous episode of King Philip's War. On May 2, 1676, Mary Rowlandson of Lancaster, the wife of a Puritan minister, was released there after negotiations over her ransom between the Native Americans holding her and John Hoar of Concord; an inscription adds that King Philip was present but refused consent. Rowlandson later wrote a captivity narrative that became a classic of colonial American literature, giving the site importance in both the war's history and the history of American writing. The land was acquired by the Trustees of Reservations in 1953 and is open to the public.
