Wachusett Mountain in central Massachusetts became one of the state’s best-known ski destinations through decades of gradual development. Early ski trails were cut by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934 and 1937, and during World War II soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division trained there. The area added its first T-bars in 1960 and 1962, expanded significantly in 1982, and now offers more than two dozen trails, snowmaking, night skiing, and extensive lift service. It has also been the center of environmental conflict over expansion near old-growth forest, leading to protests, court action, and lasting protections for the preserved area.
