The 29th Regiment New Jersey Volunteer Infantry served faithfully in the Union Army during the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. It was mustered in at Camp Vredenburgh near Freehold on September 20, 1862. The regiment participated in the Battles of Fredericksburg, Virginia, on December 13–14, 1862, and Chancellorsville, Virginia, on May 2–3, 1863, as well as other engagements. Friends of the regiment erected this memorial in 1925 through a committee appointed on September 10, 1924, and it was unveiled on May 30, 1925.
