White Mountains Wilderness is a 228,454-acre protected area in the White Mountains of eastern California, created by Congress in 2009 under the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act. Most of it lies within Inyo National Forest under U.S. Forest Service management, with the rest under the Bureau of Land Management. It includes White Mountain, the Great Basin’s highest peak at 14,252 feet, and part of Cottonwood Creek, designated Wild and Scenic in the same legislation. The wilderness preserves a high, arid mountain landscape that supports desert bighorn sheep, pronghorn, mule deer, Paiute cutthroat trout, more than 1,000 plant species and varieties, and the northern end of the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest.
