Puerta Real, the Royal Gate through which officers of the American Army entered the walled city to negotiate the surrender of Manila, stood as a symbol of the territory and responsibility acquired by the United States of America through that victory. The capture of Manila was recalled on its thirteenth anniversary on August 13th, 1911. Colorado honored the 1st Regt. Colorado Infantry U.S. Volunteers for their services in the Spanish American War and the Philippine Insurrection of 1898-1899.
