At Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, on March 5, 1946, Winston Churchill delivered his “Iron Curtain” speech, warning that “from Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic an IRON CURTAIN has descended across the Continent.” He said that behind that line lay the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe, including Warsaw, Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade, Bucharest, and Sofia, and that these cities and the populations around them were in the Soviet sphere and subject not only to Soviet influence but, in many cases, to increasing control from Moscow. The speech warned the world about the East-West division of Europe created by the Iron Curtain.
