Creek Capitol

Erected in 1878 during the leadership of Principal Chief Ward Coachman, this was the capitol of the Creek Nation, which had organized in 1867 under a written constitution and named Okmulgee as its capital. Noted chiefs here included Samuel Checote, Joseph Perryman, Isparhecher, and Pleasant Porter. The “Okmulgee Constitution” was written here in the Inter-Tribal Council in 1870 and was intended for the organization of all Indian Territory.
