The Vaughan Infirmary treated the most critically ill patients. The building, the oldest of the patient buildings, opened in 1921 and had a central corridor and two large wings with private rooms for most of its 125 patients. Between the wings, a courtyard shaded by large trees provided a rustic setting for outdoor summer entertainment and concerts. The infirmary also housed a large branch of the Wayne County Library with thousands of books, along with the sewing and linen room, mail room, electrician's shop, stockroom, and sanatorium store. When the Maybury Sanatorium opened, tuberculosis took 100 lives a year from every 100,000 persons in Detroit.
