Horsetooth Mountain is a 7,259-foot summit in the foothills west of Fort Collins, known for Horsetooth Rock, a striking pegmatite outcrop whose tooth-like shape gave the mountain its name. One of the area’s most recognizable landmarks, it appears on the city seal and also lent its name to nearby Horsetooth Reservoir and Horsetooth Road. The mountain, now within Horsetooth Mountain Open Space, was once owned by the Soderberg family before the county acquired it in 1982 through an open-space tax purchase. Today it is a popular destination for hikers and mountain bikers, and its open space supports wildlife including mule deer, black bears, mountain lions, and coyotes.
