Linwood Cottage, built in 1855 for Bucksport jeweler and clockmaker James Emery, combined Gothic, Greek Revival, and Italianate styles in a way that reflected Emery’s eclectic interests, which included jewelry, books, and fancy goods sold at his downtown shop. A talented artist influenced by his friendship with the noted marine painter Fitz Henry Lane, Emery created topographic views such as an 1859 lithograph of Bucksport, a lithograph of High Street, Belfast, a drawing of Main Street, Bucksport, and a lithograph of the East Maine Conference Seminary in Bucksport. He is also remembered as an architect who designed Bucksport landmarks including Linwood Cottage, the Torrent Engine Company Fire House, the First Unitarian Church, and Emery Hall. During a visit to Bucksport in 1867, John Martin of Bangor sketched Emery’s home and called it the handsomest wooden building he had ever seen.
