The M60 series tanks entered service with the army in 1960. The M60A3 incorporated improvements to gunfire control and entered service in 1978. This M60 form became the most advanced American main battle tank in service during the early 1980's. The M60A3 remained active for the U.S. military until 1997 and was then phased out.
