Nanih Waiya was the first Choctaw capitol and council ground, where the first constitution written in Oklahoma was adopted by the Choctaw Nation in 1834 under Chiefs Joseph Kincaid, Thomas LeFlore, and Nitakechi. The Tuskahoma Council House, the last Choctaw capitol, was erected in 1884 during the leadership of Principal Chief Jackson McCurtain.
