Fort Duffield is Kentucky’s oldest and best preserved earthen fortification. Its earthen walls were designed to stop cannon balls, unlike the wooden stockade fortifications of earlier periods. The original 1,000-foot-long earthen wall was approximately 17 feet from the bottom of the ditch to the top of the wall, and the top of the wall was approximately 9 feet wide. Time has eroded the walls to their present height and thickness.
