In 1861, Union Army General William T. Sherman built a fort on top of the hill overlooking West Point to protect the supply base there. The trenches remain intact to this date. It was named Fort Duffield in honor of the father of the post commander. Other Civil War camps at West Point were Camp Buell, Camp Blair, and Camp Armstrong. Sixty-one Union soldiers died and were buried at Fort Duffield.
