Fort Duffield, a Union Civil War fort on Pearman Hill outside West Point, Kentucky, was built in late 1861 to protect an important supply route and support Union operations centered on West Point and Elizabethtown. Ordered by William Tecumseh Sherman and completed in about two months by the 37th Indiana and 9th Michigan Infantry, it held about 950 troops before losing much of its military purpose as soldiers moved to the front. Used only lightly in 1862 and abandoned that fall, it later stood unused when John Hunt Morgan's raiders passed nearby in 1863. Its well-preserved serpentine earthworks, restored by volunteers beginning in 1995, remain open to hikers.
