Mount Baldy, or Dził Łigai in Western Apache, is an extinct stratovolcano in eastern Arizona and the highest point in the White Mountains and Apache County at 11,409 feet. Sacred to the Apache of Arizona, it was one of the key mountain ranges that defined Western Apache homelands. Its summit, on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, rises more than 6,000 feet above Historic Fort Apache and stands largely bare above the tree line. Mount Baldy is also vital to Arizona’s water system, with headwaters of the Little Colorado and Salt rivers on its slopes, abundant precipitation, lakes, trout streams, and plentiful wildlife.
