The powerhouse supplied the entire sanatorium through a single complex under one roof that included a water pumping station for water needs and fire protection, an ice plant, pasteurization plant, laundry facilities, machine shop, paint shop, electric generators for power and electricity, and a central heating plant. In the 1940's, its operations required 5290 tons of coal per year, and total yearly water usage was 60 million gallons, all pumped by the powerhouse from springs and wells on the property. As Mr. Maybury said in an interview published in The Northville Record on Nov. 18, 1921, one building furnished light, heat, water, and an additional water supply for fire protection, while water already cooled was piped up to the sanatorium from the ice plant.
