Brainard Homestead State Park in East Haddam, Connecticut, preserves a largely undeveloped nineteenth-century rural homestead rather than a built recreation area. Its known history begins in 1842, when Timothy Green built a farmhouse and leased it to Jonathan Morgan. Sold in 1854 to Selden Tyler Brainerd, the property became home to Brainerd, his wife Harriet, and their five children. Geraldine W. Hayden later left the land to the State of Connecticut as a memorial to her grandfather, though William Brainerd retained lifetime use. Established as a state park by 1932, the site now is marked chiefly by foundations and cellar pits within active farmland.
